Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays. This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community. We are planning for May meetings to be available both in person at West Suburban Temple Har Zion and via zoom. Please join us in person if you can!
STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussions on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other. Recent presenters have included Cecily Mango on her experiences as a foreign service officer with the US Agency for International Development, STAR members DeeDee and Maury Mufson on their life in southern West Virginia, and Har Zion member Michael Zmora on the history leading to the purchase of land and construction of Temple Har Zion and Oak Park Temple.
STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In August, STAR is currently scheduled to meet as follows:
August 7th - Cecily Mango will speak to us about her travels to Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Jordan
August 14th -- We will be showing a film by Lauren Levine, narrated by Brad Pitt : "UNITY TEMPLE: Frank Lloyd Wright's Modern Masterpiece." David Sokol will be in attendance to introduce the film and answer questions.
August 21st -- Our presenter is Jordana Hoffman, who recently became the Director of Programming and Member Engagement at Oak Park Temple. She will be leading and expanding Oak Park Temple’s offerings of all kinds of programming. Jordana has a background in Jewish and Israel studies and has many years of experience leading programming and outreach in congregational and business settings.
August 28th -- Our presenter is Michelle Fitzhenry, a retired Oak Park firefighter. She will talk with us about her work with the Oak Park Fire Department.
Watch your temple's weekly bulletins for updates on STAR programming.
