For generations, Progressive Judaism virtually ignored two beautiful and ancient rituals, both of which carry deep meaning and tradition within the Jewish community.
- Mikvah - ritual immersion in a small pool of naturally gathered water to mark the final step in conversion to Judaism as well as other milestone moments
- Tahara - honoring the dead by ritually washing and dressing the deceased in preparation for burial
Over the past decade many Reform congregations, including Oak Park Temple, have reclaimed Mikvah and Tahara as part of our communal life.
Join Cantor Emerita Julie Yugend-Green to explore, learn and discuss Mikvah and Tahara - the traditions behind the rituals, and how Progressive Judaism has restored them for ourselves in 2024/5784.
Wednesday, March 20, 7:00 pm - Learn about the ancient rituals of Mikvah and Tahara, and how “Mayim Chayim - Living Waters” - connects them both.
Wednesday, April 3, 7:00 pm - Explore and discuss how Mikvah and Tahara are being reclaimed by Progressive Judaism, following generations of a lack of awareness of their meaning and beauty.
