Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays. This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community. We are planning for July meetings to be available both in person at West Suburban Temple Har Zion and via zoom. Please join us in person if you can!
STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussions on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other. Recent presenters have included Cantor Agnes Valdman of Oak Park Temple, Fair Vote Illinois on rank choice voting, STAR member Bob Munman on the history of art prints, and STAR member Alan Hoffstadter on "The One Thousand Children: Rescue and Resettlement." In the Holocaust, 1.5 Million Jewish children perished. The United States rescued little more than 1,000 of those at risk, including Alan's mother.
STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In July, STAR will meet as follows:
July 4th - STAR DOES NOT MEET; enjoy the Independence Day holiday
July 11th - Oak Park Temple member Steve Gevinson will present on his experiences teaching in a high performing public school (Oak Park and River Forest High School), compared with his experiences teaching at an elite private school in Hyde Park
July 18th - Neena Scaria of the Cook County States Attorney's Office will speak on changes in the state laws regarding cannabis that just took effect
July 25th - a chance to schmooze and perhaps a special guest or a movie
Watch your temple's weekly bulletins for updates on STAR programming.
