Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays. This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community. We are planning for March meetings to be available both in person at West Suburban Temple Har Zion and via zoom, except where noted. Please join us in person if you can!
STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussions on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other. Recent presenters have included Cantor Agnes Valdman of Oak Park Temple, the Illinois Holocaust Museum on the Jewish deli, and Superintendent Dr. Ushma Shah of school district 97 in Oak Park. STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In March, STAR will meet on the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th:
March 7th - STAR members Sandra Sokol and Janet Kelenson, each a retired local elected official, will speak on the March 2024 elections
March 14th - a chance to schmooze and perhaps a special guest or a movie
March 21st - a chance to schmooze and perhaps a special guest or a movie
March 28th - Executive Director Jan Arnold of the Park District of Oak Park will speak about the Community Recreation Center
Also during March, STAR anticipates having Dr. Evan McKenzie, professor at UIC, speak to us on issues related to gated communities and condos. At each STAR meeting, there is an opportunity for schmoozing and sharing.
Watch your temple's weekly bulletins for updates on STAR programming.
If you'd like more information about STAR, contact your Temple office. We at STAR feel like a small community learning and growing together. Please join us!
