STAR

Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays.  This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community. We are planning for our October meetings to be available both in person at West Suburban Temple Har Zion and via zoom, except where noted. Please join us in person if you can!

STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussions on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other.  Recent presentations have included an Illinois Holocaust Museum docent-led talk on Nazi Propaganda: Fueling Hate and Genocide, a presentation by Abby Schmelling on Waldheim Cemetery, and presentations on the Oak Park Public Library, the Takeout 25 Program, and the Monuments Men. STAR also recently hosted the superintendent of Oak Park and River Forest High School and the CEO of the Age Options agency. STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. 

In October, STAR will meet on the 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th:
October 5th - A chance to schmooze and perhaps a special guest
October 12th - Mark Friedberger will speak on "My Family and the British Empire: Jewish Assimilation, Slavery, Capitalism, and Military Service: 1650-1964"
October 19th - A chance to schmooze and perhaps a special guest
October 26th - A chance to schmooze and perhaps a special guest
