STAR
Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays. This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community.
We are moving back to in person only meetings, and our June 29th meeting will be in person only, with no zoom available.
STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussions on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other. Recent speakers at STAR include Har Zion Temple's Rabbi Emeritus Mirelman and Oak Park Temple's Rabbi Kirzane. Other recent speakers have included Oak Park Temple members author and actor Joyce Porter and community activist Judith Alexander, OPRFHS graduate Tim Mellman, who successfully advocated to have Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur become non-attendance days on the high school calendar, and Shatonya Johnson, Chief of Police in Oak Park. STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. STAR has a limited number of tickets available to a CSO rehearsal in June, 2023, and we'll share details at our meetings.
In June, 2023, STAR will meet on the 1st, 8th, 22nd, and 29th:
June 1st -- A chance to schmooze, and perhaps a special guest
June 8th -- The Illinois Holocaust Museum presents: "Nazi Propaganda: Fueling Hate and Genocide"
Propaganda was one of the most important and effective tools used by Nazis to shape the beliefs and attitudes of the German public. STAR attendees will view a virtual docent-led tour exploring techniques the Nazis used to build support and acceptance of their vision for Germany’s future. You may attend in person at West Suburban Temple, or via zoom.
June 15th -- STAR does not meet; some STAR participants will attend a CSO rehearsal
June 22nd -- A chance to schmooze, and perhaps a special guest
June 29th -- STAR is pleased to have Oak Park Temple member Chuck Berman join us in person at West Suburban Temple Har Zion to discuss his birding experiences. Please plan to attend this meeting in person, as it will not be presented via zoom.
