Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays. This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community. We are planning for September meetings to be available both in person and via zoom. The September 4th meeting will take place at Oak Park Temple B'nai Abraham Zion and the remaining September meetings will likely be held at West Suburban Temple Har Zion, but please watch your temple emails for updates on location and programming. Please join us in person if you can!
STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussions on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other. Recent presenters have included Cecily Mango on her travels to Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Jordan; STAR and Oak Park Temple member Peri Arnold on a history of Jews and the Democratic machine in the 24th ward under the leadership of Jacob Arvey; a showing of the film "UNITY TEMPLE: Frank Lloyd Wright's Modern Masterpiece," with Oak Park Temple member David Sokol attending to introduce the film and answer questions; and Jordana Hoffman, the new Director of Programming and Member Engagement at Oak Park Temple, discussing her work and how we can participate.
STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In September, STAR is currently scheduled to meet as follows:
September 4th - *MEET AT OAK PARK TEMPLE* - STAR member Mark Friedberger will discuss with us his paper on "Academicians in Chicago: the Golden Age and After, 1965-2019"
September 11th - Temple Har Zion member Barb Yong will present on "The Wage Gap and What We Can Do About It"
September 18th - A chance to schmooze and perhaps a movie or special guest
September 25th - A chance to schmooze and perhaps a movie or special guest
Watch your temple's weekly bulletins for updates on STAR programming and location.
