We had to know who we were; We had to know who we weren't is an ongoing body of work documenting Jewish life, past and present, in the rural and small town Deep South. For the last two years, Emily has travelled to over 60 towns across Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia to photograph Jewish sites and conduct oral history interviews with Jewish residents in these oft-overlooked locales. Her work has been supported by the Texas Jewish Historical Society, the Southern Jewish Historical Society, and the Alabama Folklife Association.
