Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays. This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community. We are planning for May meetings to be available both in person at West Suburban Temple Har Zion and via zoom, except where noted. Please join us in person if you can!
STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussions on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other. Recent presenters have included Cantor Agnes Valdman of Oak Park Temple, the Illinois Holocaust Museum on the history of the Jewish deli, and Superintendent Dr. Ushma Shah of Oak Park School District 97. STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In May, STAR will meet on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th:
May 2nd - a chance to schmooze and perhaps a special guest or a movie
May 9th - Our guests will be presenters from Fair Vote Illinois and we will hear about rank choice voting
May 16th - a chance to schmooze and perhaps a special guest or a movie
May 23rd - Erica Helms, Oak Park's Environmental Services Manager will be discussing the changes in the Village's fall leaf collection services. On April 30th, the Village Board voted 5-2 to require that village residents bag their leaves for pickup, rather than rake them into the street for collection.
May 30th - a chance to schmooze and perhaps a special guest or a movie
At each STAR meeting, there is an opportunity for schmoozing and sharing.
Watch your temple's weekly bulletins for updates on STAR programming.
If you'd like more information about STAR, contact your Temple office. We at STAR feel like a small community learning and growing together. Please join us!
