Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays. This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community. We are planning for February meetings to be available both in person at West Suburban Temple Har Zion and via zoom, except where noted. Please join us in person if you can!
STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussions on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other. Recent guests have included Abby Schmelling presenting on Waldheim Cemetery, Cantor Agnes Valdman of Oak Park Temple, Professor Peggy Ann Spitzer on "Female Empowerment and Climate Action," and a presentation by TV, film and advertising executive Sheila R. Brown. STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In February, STAR will meet on the 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd:
February 1st - “I’ll Have What She’s Having”: The history of the Jewish Deli in America, presented by the Illinois Holocaust Museum
February 8th - Jan Arnold, Executive Director of Park District of Oak Park, will present on the Community Recreation Center and on Active Adults programming
February 15th - Superintendent Dr. Ushma Shah of Oak Park Elementary School District 97 will discuss with STAR: "How should we envision the Portrait of an Oak Park 8th Grade Graduate?”
February 22nd - Sun-Hee Yoon will speak with us about her local small business, Sage Lifestyle Concierge
February 29th - STAR does not meet so that STAR participants can attend a CSO open rehearsal
Watch your temple's weekly bulletins for updates on STAR programming.
