Saturday, November 23, 2019 • 25 Cheshvan 5780
4:00 PM - 7:00 PMJoin us on Saturday November 23 at 4 pm for a special event featuring the film, Bal Ej, The Hidden Jews of Ethiopia. The evening will include a live stream conversation from Israel with the film’s producer and director, Irene Orleansky, followed by an Ethiopian meal. (Havdalah and conversation with Ms. Orleansky will precede the 97-minute film.)
Bal Ej: the hidden Jews of Ethiopia is a documentary about the history, traditions and plight of the Jews of the North Shewa region of Ethiopia. There are still a number of Jews living in Addis Ababa and North Shewa in Ethiopia, most of whom practice a pre-Talmudic form of Judaism secretly. Though they appear Christians outwardly, inwardly they never abandoned Judaism and continue to practice in strict secret in spite of fears of murder and persecution. This documentary lifts the curtain of hundreds of years and show us the history, traditions and music of this remarkable community that keeps faithful to their beliefs and ancient Hebrew traditions, some of which have been completely forgotten by the rest of the Jewish world.
RSVP to attend the film and catered Ethiopian meal to:
$20 per person.
Sponsored by Oak Park Temple Adult Education. Teens welcome.
