Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays. This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community. We are planning for February meetings to be available both in person and via zoom. Our meetings are held at West Suburban Temple Har Zion, but we may have to relocate in the event of construction. Please watch your temple emails for updates on location and programming. Please join us in person if you can!
STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussion on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other. Recent presenters have included STAR and Oak Park Temple member Peri Arnold on a history of Jews and the Democratic machine in the 24th ward under the leadership of Jacob Arvey; Jordana Hoffman, the Director of Programming and Member Engagement at Oak Park Temple, discussing her work and how we can participate; Har Zion member Barb Yong on "The Wage Gap and What We Can Do About It," and Mike (Maish) Bass, speaking on "Reflections on 35 Years of MameLoshn, Oak Park's Yiddish Song Group."
STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In February, STAR is currently scheduled to meet as follows:
February 5th - Park District of Oak Park Executive Director Jan Arnold will speak on the upcoming pool referendum
February 12th - Craig Failor, Director of the Development Services Department of the Village of Oak Park, will speak on "the missing middle," affordable housing in Oak Park
February 19th - A chance to schmooze and perhaps a movie or special guest
February 26th - STAR members Sandra Sokol and Janet Kelenson will speak on the upcoming election, including the seat in the United States House of Representatives, 7th District
Watch your temple's weekly bulletins for updates on STAR programming and location.
