Israel's National Water Carrier  -- pumping water from the Sea of Galilee to Tel Aviv since the 1950’s -- was a national infrastructure project which allowed for the rapid development of the thirsty, densely populated center of the country.  However, as the Kinneret's water level reached ever lower levels, it was desalination technology which created the opportunity for Israel to become a water super-power.
